Sostre Cívic
Spain
Established in 2004, Sostre Civic functions as a cooperative promoting non-speculative housing alternatives through the grant-of-use housing cooperative model. Initially formed as an association when the cooperative housing model in grant-of-use was unknown in Catalonia, it transitioned into a cooperative in 2010, assuming the role of an umbrella organization.
Sostre Civic supports and guides groups in creating, constructing and managing their buildings while also advocating for this housing model in the region. With a primary focus on disseminating and supporting cooperative housing projects, the organization engages in various activities, including participating in events, influencing housing policies, and collaborating with entities in the social and solidarity economy to create a network.
Financed by member contributions and public subsidies, Sostre Civic currently has over 1400 members and has played a pivotal role in the creation of 22 projects, providing 175 homes. The cooperative's strategy involves independent management and assembly for each project, fostering a network of diverse projects. Sostre Civic discourages speculation and promotes the replicability of the model.
